Beyond The Dog House

Simon Parson's piece on Joker

Best in show at the British Utility Breeds Association was the Lhasa Apso Ch Sandauri ShowStopper for Kutani (Joker), owned by Wendy Cain.
Wendy’s first champion was Parlu Red Barron who won his first CC from Terry Thorn in 1988.
Since then her best known Lhasas include Ch Kutani Cincinnati who was BIS at SKC 1992 and won 18 CCs.
Significant Kutani males include the influential Multi Ch Kutani Reckless, who was RBIS at East of England in 2003, then moved to Finland to Juha Kares where he continued to influence the Chic Choix line. Reckless then comes full circle as he features significantly in Joker’s pedigree.
Ch Kutani Rogue Trader produced many CC winners before his untimely death at five years, while Ch Kutani Lightning Strike (Noah) had a group and several group places with his ten CCs.
In total there have been 12 Kutani-bred champions, plus five others Wendy has shown to their titles.
In 2015 she had to undergo six months of chemotherapy and couldn’t maintain the coat on her show Lhasa, Ch Kutani Snowfall (Ch Kutani Skyfall ex Ch Tantra’s Plenty O’Toole isa Kutani, both going back more than once to Reckless).
A close friend had always wanted to show him in her country (Russia) and so the hard decision was made to let him go there. A request was made to use him at stud by Nadja Rudenko. Says Wendy: “The bitch in question, a gorgeous black Chic Choix girl, I had already fallen in love with when I saw her at the World Show in Helsinki. I said that I didn’t want a stud fee but would like a puppy back instead.” The dam, Rus/Fin/Cz Ch Chic Choix Per Vaspera Ad Astra, is by Int/Am/Fin/Est/Norw Ch Chic Choix Adrenalin Rush (a Reckless grandson) ex Int/Am/Fin/Dan/Sw Ch Chic Choix Faith Hope Love (by Reckless).
There were only two in the litter, a dog and bitch. The dog came to the UK in 2016, brought over by someone showing at Crufts that year. Wendy had only seen photos of him ‘which showed this amazing puppy’. This was Joker; his sister, Sandauri Show Must Go On, won best bitch at the World Show in Leipzig 2017 and has many titles.
Joker’s first RCC came at Midland Counties under Rodney Oldham. His first CC came at the Wales and West Club in November 2016 when he was still in puppy, judge Geoff Corish.
In 2017 he won 14 CCs with 11 BOB plus four RCCs. 2018 saw him take another 17 CCs (including Crufts BOB, judge John Scarll, and shortlisted in the group Mike Gilchrist) with 11 BOB and two RCCs, bringing his total so far to 32 CCs, 27 BOB and seven RCCs.
He has four BIS at breed ch shows, his first coming under Mark James aged just 17 months, four G2, four G3 and one G4. The elusive group 1 came at BUBA this year when he won BIS under Sheila Jakeman.
Among his winning progeny, Kutani Shockwave took the CC and BIS at a breed show while his sister Kutani Material Girl has two RCCs.
Two littermates by him have battled out which one will be top puppy this year, Khinjan Scarlett Pimpernel just pipping his sister Khinjan Bellisima to the post. Another sister Khinjan Rose Gold won BP at the World Show in Amsterdam this year.
